Rethinking the Paper Cup

NatureWorks' Packaging Industry Manager, Nicole Whiteman, presents Rethinking the Paper Cup with Ingeo™ Biomaterials for Coatings.
Paper cups were originally developed to address concerns around public health and convenience. Today, companies are looking to design paper cups to fit multiple after-use options like recycling and composting. In this video, Nicole digs into this background and explains why paper cups need to continue evolving to meet these new demands.
Nicole also covers why running Ingeo on extrusion coating lines is different than LDPE and what new approaches can be used to close the gap. She also talks about how NatureWorks’s first grade designed specifically for extrusion coatings, Ingeo 1102, improves processing efficiency including lighter coating weights, broad stable web with great adhesion, and a tougher coating for pinhole-free and faster cup making rates.

Nicole's presentation was delivered and recorded at the Innovation Takes Root 2018 last September in Rancho Bernardo, CA.

Low Shear Mixing of PLA

A study we contributed to is featured in the latest Compounding World magazine. Many compostable bioplastics are polyesters and are shear-sensitive by nature, so low-shear processing is required to help maintain polymer integrity and achieve optimal physical properties. We worked with Farrel Pomini, who makes the Farrel Continuous Mixer (FCM), in a joint research program to compare the processing of its Ingeo compounds on a twin-screw extruder (TSE) and the FCM. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects on molecular weight loss in PLA while adding a talc mineral. Read full article.

What Composting Packaging Really Means

Video by fellow New Plastics Economy participants Novamont, PepsiCo, and Unilever does a really great job of explaining how commercial composting works, the high standards/testing that goes into certifying products as compostable, and how littering is not composting. Take a look!

NatureWorks Digs in to Volunteering

We rolled up our sleeves and planted trees with Great River Greening at St. Louis Park, MN's Westwood Hills Nature Center. On Thursday, September 19th, the "Performance and Sustainability in the Community" team of NatureWorks employee volunteers headed out to Westwood Hills Nature Center to plant trees. Together as a team of almost 40, we were able to plant 50 trees in an effort to replace trees taken down in the building of the park's new Interpretive Center. Teaming up with local restoration group, Great River Greening was a good experience and we're so grateful to have such a strong, willing team to contribute in making our communities grow.
